Overview
Manual tasks are part of everyday work, and done poorly they are one of the biggest causes of workplace injury in Australia.
This nationally recognised unit gives you the skills and knowledge to conduct manual tasks safely, from identifying hazardous manual tasks and assessing risk to using safe techniques, equipment and teamwork to protect yourself and others.
We offer two standard options: general manual handling, and manual handling in a care environment for those supporting clients and patients. Both suit workplaces across aged care, disability, health, early childhood, warehousing and more.
Course Outline
This nationally recognised unit (HLTWHS005 – Conduct Manual Tasks Safely) covers the skills and knowledge needed to conduct manual tasks safely in the workplace. The training is practical, hands-on and focused on real-world application.
Safe Manual Handling Techniques
Apply safe techniques for lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and lowering loads.
Equipment and Mechanical Aids
Use mechanical aids and equipment to reduce manual handling risk, including in care environments.
Legal and Reporting Requirements
Know your WHS responsibilities around manual tasks, including duty of care, hazard reporting and incident procedures.
Risk Control and Prevention
Contribute to risk controls and safe work practices that prevent manual task injuries.
Understanding Manual Tasks
Learn what makes a manual task hazardous and how manual task injuries occur in the workplace.
This course is delivered in a blended format, combining pre-course online learning with a face-to-face session.
Pre-course online learning: 3 hours, completed in your own time before class.
In class: 3 hours of practical, face-to-face training.
Two standard options are available: general manual handling, and manual handling in a care environment. Let us know which suits your workplace when booking.

Learners will require English language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills.

This course includes both a theory and practical component. You’ll learn by doing—working through engaging, real-world scenarios guided by qualified trainers. To successfully complete the course, learners must:
- Complete the pre-course online learning
- Participate in all practical training
- Pass a short theory assessment
- Demonstrate safe manual handling techniques, including the use of equipment and mechanical aids
There is no set industry renewal period for this course. Many workplaces refresh manual handling training regularly as part of their WHS program, and we recommend following your workplace policy.
Certificates are issued by ABC First Aid RTO 3399, subject to successful completion of all course requirements and following internal processing.
