Overview

This nationally accredited course (HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an Education & Care Setting) equips you with the skills to respond confidently to a wide range of emergencies in childcare, school, and community environments.

Training is practical and engaging, with a focus on infants and children. You’ll learn how to perform CPR, safely use an AED, and manage asthma, anaphylaxis, and common childhood injuries in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

Course Outline

This nationally accredited course (HLTAID012) provides the skills to respond to first aid emergencies involving children and infants in education and care settings. Training is practical and hands-on, covering CPR, AED use, asthma, anaphylaxis, and common injuries in line with ARC guidelines. By the end, you’ll be confident and prepared to act quickly when it matters most.

  1. The DRSABCD action plan and responding to an emergency

    Learn how to quickly assess and respond to an emergency scene using the DRSABCD protocol — a proven approach for managing life-threatening situations safely and effectively.

  2. Managing Unconscious Casualties (Adults, Children & Infants)

    Understand how to safely care for unresponsive individuals across all age groups, with a focus on infants and young children.

  3. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) & Using a Defibrillator (AED)

    Learn how to perform life-saving chest compressions and rescue breaths, and safely operate an AED when every second counts.

  4. Infection Control and Legal Responsibilities

    Develop safe hygiene habits and gain awareness of your legal obligations when providing first aid.

  5. Recognise and Manage Common Medical Conditions & Injuries

    Identify and respond to a wide range of childhood emergencies including:

    • Asthma
    • Bleeding
    • Choking
    • Burns
    • Seizures
    • Spinal injuries
    • Fractures
    • Heat stroke

  6. First Aid Incident Reporting

This course is delivered in a blended format, combining online learning with a face-to-face practical assessment.

Learners will require English language, literacy, and numeracy (LLN) skills.

Nil – all learners welcome, no prior experience required

This course includes both theory and practical components. Guided by experienced paramedics, you’ll work through realistic scenarios tailored to the education and care environment. To successfully complete the course, learners must:

  • Participate in all practical training
  • Pass a short theory assessment
  • Demonstrate effective CPR for at least two minutes on a manikin placed on the floor

Your nationally recognised Statement of Attainment is valid for 3 years. The HLTAID009 (CPR) component should be renewed every 12 months.
